A l’instar d’un Jim Jarmush qui remit au goût du jour la musique éthiopienne, à travers la bande originale de Broken flowers, le Badume’s Band est un véritable passeur de culture musicale en Occident. Pris d’amour pour ce genre original qu’est l’éthio-jazz, ce groupe atypique originaire de Bretagne, s’est mis en tête de recréer l’atmosphère de l’Addis-Abeba des année 60 et 70, lorsque la capitale africaine tourbillonnait au son du twist, de la soul et du rythm’n’blues. Tout d’abord amené par la voix du chanteur Eric Menneteau, puis celle de Mahmoud Ahmed et de Selmanesh Zéméné, le Badume’s Band revisite depuis plusieurs années l’âge d’or de la musique éthiopienne avec une maestria jubilatoire.
This atypical Breton group recreates the atmosphere of Addis Ababa of the 60’s and 70’s, when the Africain capital swirled in the sound of twist, the soul & rythm’n blues.Today, they perform with several singers : the famous Mahmoud Ahmed, the princess Selamnesh Ze- mene and the dancer Zenash Tsegaye, but also with their fisrt singer, the breton Eric Menneteau !
Avec la chanteuse Selamnesh Zéméné, ils créent un répertoire de compositions qui empruntent aux standards 70’s (« oldies » et « goldies » comme Tezeta , Mela Mela…), aux pépites du patrimoine ancien éthiopien et à des influences plus modernes. Selamnesh Zéméné appartient à la communauté nomade Azmari de la région de Gonder dans les hauts plateaux à 750 kms d’Addis Abeba. Ensemble, ils transforment la scène en véritable azmaribet, cabaret improvisé des ruelles d’Addis-Abeba où les danseurs, chanteurs et musiciens éthiopiens croquaient à pleines dents les travers de leur société. Toujours entraînant, toujours indocile, laissez-vous séduire par le chant et la danse des deux étoiles montantes féminines d’Addis Abeba.
The 60s and 70s was a very special period in Ethiopian music. In the new millennium music collectors have discovered and distributed this musical treasure of golden funk, jazz, afrobeat and soul. The music of this period in time has a distinct beat, which is not found in James Brown or Fela Kuti. Clearly Badume’s Band is in love with these glory days and though the nine man ensemble consists of Frenchmen they earlier let their saxophones glitter as a backing band for the grand old man of the musical golden age; Mahmoud Ahmed. Led by the Ethiopian singer Selamnesh Zemene, Badume’s Band recreate the Addis Ababa of 1970. Together they embody not just a past but also a future of Ethiopian, urban music.
Selamnesh Zemene belongs to the nomadic community Azmari of Gonder, region located in the highlands, 750 km north of Addis Ababa. The Azmaris often perform in bars called Azmaribet and are known for their irreverent humor and skillful improvisations. Between tradition and modernity, the Badume’s Band revisits the Azmari’s repertoire by borrowing from electric colors of 70’s Swinging Addis .
« The set alternates between instrumental times, rhythmic songs and melancholic tracks, with a permanent mind of harmony. You leave the concert with the feeling of not be present at a simple concert. For two hours, the audience became immersed in one of Addis Ababa clubs in the middle of the 70s, and seeing the smiles and dances in the front row, it is hoped that Badume’s Band continue to revive the Ethio-jazz for many years to come … «
